What Image Sizes and Aspect Ratios Can Sonny Generate?

Understanding sizes of generated images with Sonny

Written by Chris Toscano

Different social media platforms have different image requirements. What looks great on Instagram might get cropped on LinkedIn. Here's a breakdown of the aspect ratios and resolutions Sonny currently supports, and which platforms they work best for.

Supported Aspect Ratios & Resolutions

Aspect Ratio

Format

Resolution

1:1

Square

1024 × 1024 px

4:5

Portrait

1024 x 1280 px

16:9

Landscape

1792 x 1008 px

9:16

Portrait

1008 x 1792 px

💡 These three ratios were chosen because they are accepted across all major social media platforms, removing any guesswork when generating images for your posts.

How to Request a Specific Aspect Ratio

When asking Sonny to create an image, simply specify the format you need. For example:

  • "Sonny, create a square image for my Instagram post about our summer sale."

  • "Generate a landscape image for LinkedIn announcing our new product launch."

  • "I need a portrait image for Instagram promoting tonight's event."

Sonny will generate the image at the correct resolution for the format you've requested.

If you decide that you want to keep a specific aspect ratio for a certain platform, you can also instruct Sonny to do that and save those instructions in the guidelines.

Why Only Three Ratios?

We deliberately keep it to three ratios to ensure compatibility across all platforms and to avoid ambiguity. For example, there are multiple portrait and landscape ratios out there, and selecting the wrong one can lead to awkward cropping on some platforms. The three ratios Sonny supports cover the vast majority of social media use cases.

We're actively working on expanding the options available. More flexibility in image generation is on the way.
